Leadership Beyond Borders: Metro Chiefs and Africa Fire Mission Partner to Strengthen Fire Service Leadership

Leadership is built by serving others, embracing new challenges, and learning from peers. That belief is at the heart of the partnership between Africa Fire Mission (AFM) and the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association.

Africa Fire Mission is collaborating with the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association with a training initiative project in 2027!

Together, Metro Chiefs and AFM are creating opportunities for fire service leaders to share expertise, strengthen departments, and build lasting relationships with colleagues across Africa.

This partnership takes its next step in October 2026 as AFM and Metro Chiefs begin working with the Liberia National Fire Service. The initial visit will focus on building relationships, assessing priorities, and developing a long-term strategy to strengthen fire prevention, emergency response, leadership development, and firefighter training.

For Africa Fire Mission, the Liberia initiative reflects more than a single mission—it is an investment in developing leaders who will strengthen their departments and communities for years to come.

"Leadership grows when we step outside our comfort zones and invest in others. Every firefighter and officer who serves alongside our partners in Africa returns with new perspectives, stronger leadership skills, and a renewed commitment to serving their own communities."

— Nancy Moore, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Africa Fire Mission

Looking Ahead to 2027

The groundwork laid this fall will lead to the first joint training mission in 2027.

Metro Chiefs members will have the opportunity to serve alongside Liberian firefighters, delivering instruction, mentoring officers, and helping develop local instructors who can continue training long after the mission concludes. The goal is not simply to teach—it is to build sustainable leadership capacity.

A Leadership Development Opportunity

International service offers a unique leadership experience. Participants develop skills that directly benefit their own departments, including:

  • Leading in unfamiliar environments.

  • Coaching and mentoring future leaders.

  • Building partnerships across cultures.

  • Solving problems with limited resources.

  • Bringing fresh perspectives home to their own organizations.

Join the Mission

We’re excited to expand our mission to Liberia in 2027!

Africa Fire Mission is seeking experienced chiefs, company officers, firefighters, EMS professionals, instructors, and subject matter experts interested in serving on the Liberia mission as well as other AFM programs in 2027.

Whether your expertise is leadership, incident command, fire prevention, EMS, training, firefighting tactics, or technical rescue, you can help strengthen African fire services while gaining valuable leadership experience that benefits your own department.

The Metro Chiefs–AFM partnership demonstrates how investing in leadership beyond our borders ultimately strengthens the fire service everywhere.

We invite Metro Chiefs members and Metro departments to be part of this exciting new chapter as we work together to build stronger leaders, stronger fire services, and safer communities in Liberia and around the world.
