Motorola Solutions Foundation Awards Africa Fire Mission a Grant

Africa Fire Mission is proud to announce that we have received a $25,000 grant from the Motorola Solutions Foundation to support the 2026 Kenya Fire and EMS Training Symposium.

The grant will help AFM bring together firefighters, emergency medical professionals and fire service leaders for training designed to strengthen first responder skills, mental wellness, leadership and public safety. The 2026 program is expected to serve approximately 1,500 firefighters, EMTs and community members, with first responders from across Sub-Saharan Africa invited to participate in the symposium and replicate training across the continent.

This year’s symposium will place an increased emphasis on two areas critical to the continued development of Africa’s fire and emergency services: first responder mental wellness and leadership development. Training will also address hands-on firefighting and rescue skills, pre-hospital emergency medical response, incident command, road traffic safety and community preparedness.

AFM’s goal extends beyond providing a week of training. By developing African instructors and fire service leaders, strengthening partnerships between departments and creating opportunities for first responders to learn from one another, the symposium helps build sustainable emergency services that continue to grow long after the training concludes.

“The continued support of the Motorola Solutions Foundation allows us to invest in the people who are leading the growth of fire and emergency services across Africa,” said Nancy Moore, Executive Director of Africa Fire Mission. “We are especially excited about the opportunity to continue to strengthen leadership and mental wellness while bringing first responders together to learn, collaborate and take new skills back to their departments and communities.”

The partnership builds on the progress of previous AFM training programs in Kenya since 2015. Participants in the 2025 symposium reported significant gains in professional fire and EMS skills, safety preparedness and understanding of the equipment and resources needed to be more effective first responders. Local leadership also continued to grow, with African instructors participating in every class.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation, which has donated more than $100 million over the past 10 years, focuses its giving on two key areas: first responder programming and technology & engineering education. The Foundation has a long-standing commitment to supporting programs that benefit under-resourced populations and aims to partner with organizations that align to its values of accountability, innovation, impact and inclusion.

“The tireless dedication and transformative work of Africa Fire Mission continues to inspire us,” said Wesley Barden Touhy, executive director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “At the Motorola Solutions Foundation, we aim to be more than a donor; we’re a proud partner and champion of their mission, and we are honored to support their efforts as they create lasting, positive change across the communities they serve.”

Through support from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, Africa Fire Mission will further support first responders and the communities they serve, with the ultimate goal of helping make communities safer.

We are grateful to the Motorola Solutions Foundation for its continued partnership and investment in first responders across Africa.
