Africa Fire Mission (AFM) is excited to announce a new strategic partnership with Firefighters Without Borders (FWB) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will strengthen international collaboration in fire service training, equipment support, and professional exchange. This partnership brings together two organizations with a shared mission: to build sustainable fire service capacity in under-resourced communities and improve safety outcomes through training, education, and resource sharing.
Founded in Canada, FWB is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that mobilizes experienced fire service professionals to deliver technical training, mentorship, and targeted equipment support. With experience working with Indigenous and remote communities in Canada as well as international settings, FWB emphasizes long-term relationship building, operational relevance, and sustainable capacity development tailored to local contexts.
Together, AFM and FWB will collaborate on fundraising initiatives, joint grant applications, and coordinated equipment shipments to support fire and emergency services across Africa. Under the agreement, AFM will provide virtual training opportunities, web-based resources, and access to its growing library of fire safety tools, while FWB will contribute volunteer instructors, technical expertise, and support for international equipment donations.
A key focus of the partnership is the engagement of experienced Canadian firefighters to participate in training missions organized by AFM in countries such as Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Liberia.
“I am especially excited about this new partnership as it has the potential to engage more firefighter volunteer instructors from Canada to train in Africa,” said Nancy L. Moore, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Africa Fire Mission. “As with all partnerships, we can do more together than we can alone. This collaboration expands our reach, deepens our impact, and strengthens the global fire service community.”
“This partnership reflects our shared belief that sustainable fire service development is built on trust, technical excellence, and collaboration,” said Frank Lamie, President of Firefighters Without Borders. “By combining AFM’s regional leadership with FWB’s Canadian volunteer expertise and equipment support network, we can deliver meaningful, long-term impact for the communities we serve.”
Ryan McGill is a firefighter involved with Firefighters Without Borders who joined the AFM team for training in Zambia and Kenya! International collaboration leads to strong, sustainable development in fire departments around the world.
In addition to training, the partnership will support joint equipment requests and shipments from both Canada and the United States to African fire services, ensuring that donated gear is used strategically and aligned with real operational needs on the ground.
The agreement is active through December 31, 2030, providing a long-term framework for collaboration, innovation, and shared learning between the two organizations.
This partnership represents another important step in AFM’s commitment to its four pillars, Train, Empower, Support, and Encourage, and reflects a growing movement of global fire professionals working together to save lives, strengthen systems, and build resilient communities worldwide.
